New Student Housing Complex - Nibelungenkaserne

Regensburg, DE

The student housing project creates a sustainable and socially interactive living environment that responds sensitively to its landscape context. The design combines compact construction, flexible layouts, and passive environmental strategies.

The building adapts to the sloping site and existing trees, forming a stepped and articulated volume that connects the street with adjacent green spaces. Its layout creates outdoor areas of high quality and establishes a dialogue with the surrounding landscape. Two main entrances connect the building from north and south, leading to a central access zone with shared spaces and administration. The housing program includes a mix of single apartments, duplex units, and shared flats, all organized along efficient circulation routes with accessible design. Corridors expand at key points to create social spaces, while an internal courtyard improves daylight and orientation. The project promotes a balance between private living and communal interaction.

Outdoor areas are largely preserved as green space, with minimal sealed surfaces, structured parking, and new pathways connecting the site. Terraced outdoor zones and sheltered courtyards provide spaces for social activities.

The construction follows a robust and efficient system, combining solid structures with lightweight elements. A high-performance envelope, natural ventilation, and passive cooling strategies ensure comfort and reduce energy demand. Renewable energy systems, including geothermal heating and photovoltaics, complement the low-tech approach, resulting in a resource-efficient and future-oriented student residence.
