Paul-Winter Middle School

Neuburg, DE

The new secondary school in Neuburg-Schrobenhausen is conceived as an open, landscape-integrated campus that responds to its topography and surroundings. The design creates a flexible learning environment combining education, sports, and community spaces.

site plan

Located on a sloping site at the edge of the city, the school is organized as a composition of smaller building elements that follow the natural terrain rather than forming a single compact volume. This approach creates a diverse learning landscape that integrates buildings, open spaces, and movement areas.

A central campus core, formed by entrance, auditorium, and schoolyard across two levels, acts as the social heart. Key functions such as cafeteria, library, multipurpose areas, and all-day facilities are arranged around this center, enabling flexible use and interaction. Teaching spaces are distributed in distinct wings that extend into the landscape as “green classrooms,” offering daylight, views, and opportunities for outdoor learning. Above, a compact ring of classrooms defines the overall structure and strengthens the sense of community. Circulation areas are designed as open, communicative spaces with high spatial quality, avoiding traditional corridors. Roof terraces and direct outdoor connections further enhance usability and orientation.

The sports hall is embedded into the terrain and combined with outdoor sports facilities, concentrating athletic functions in one area. The entire campus merges architecture and landscape into a continuous environment for learning, movement, and social exchange.

The result is a bright, open, and identity-forming school that fosters interaction, flexibility, and a strong connection to its natural context.
