Further development of the school area Bernhausen

Filderstadt-Bernhausen, DE

The project reorganizes the school campus in Filderstadt into a cohesive, future-oriented learning environment that integrates new pedagogical concepts. It combines flexible learning spaces with a landscape-driven design to foster interaction and community.

The new school replaces and extends the existing Gotthard-Müller-Schule while integrating the Fleinsbachschule and allowing for future expansion. The design enables phased construction without disrupting ongoing school operations. A terraced building structure adapts to the surroundings, creating a lightweight and landscape-integrated appearance. A central foyer at ground level connects shared functions such as cafeteria, library, and specialized learning spaces, forming an open and communicative hub.

Upper levels are organized into distinct learning clusters for primary and secondary education, structured around a central atrium that acts as a vertical marketplace and orientation space. Circulation areas are conceived as extended learning environments, supporting contemporary, flexible teaching methods. Outdoor terraces and direct connections to the schoolyard enhance spatial quality and allow learning to extend beyond the classroom. Additional facilities for the Fleinsbachschule are integrated into the landscape.

Material and construction strategies emphasize durability, flexibility, and thermal performance, combining a concrete structure with a timber-based facade system. The result is an adaptable, interconnected, and identity-forming campus that supports modern education within a cohesive architectural and landscape framework.
