Unilever-House

Hamburg, DE

Located at a prominent waterfront site in Hamburg’s HafenCity, the Unilever Headquarters creates an open and publicly accessible corporate building. It combines workplace, urban space, and visitor experience into a transparent and communicative environment.

The result is a highly efficient, flexible, and socially engaging workplace that contributes to the identity of HafenCity.

site plan

At its core, a large, daylight-filled atrium acts as the social and spatial heart, open to the public at ground level with retail, café, and wellness areas. Internally, bridges, ramps, and stairs connect the different levels, fostering interaction and informal exchange. Around the atrium, open meeting points serve as hubs for communication and shared functions, linking office areas both horizontally and vertically.

The building promotes a flexible and collaborative working environment. Workspaces are no longer defined by fixed departments but by adaptable layouts and shared zones that strengthen a collective identity. High levels of user comfort are ensured through natural daylight, openable windows, individual climate control, and diverse furnishing options. Sustainability is based on a holistic approach that prioritizes passive strategies. Optimized daylight use, natural ventilation, and flexible spatial organization reduce energy demand while maintaining comfort.

A hybrid ventilation system with filtered air supply addresses the specific environmental conditions of the site, while thermal mass cooling through activated concrete slabs stabilizes indoor temperatures. The facade concept combines high transparency with climate protection. A lightweight ETFE membrane facade placed in front of the glazing acts as wind and weather protection, allowing natural ventilation and reducing structural complexity compared to conventional double facades. Energy-efficient LED lighting, water-saving systems, and the use of recyclable materials further support the sustainable concept.

By integrating public functions and returning significant open space to the city, the building extends the urban realm both outside and within.
