Elementary School, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany

Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, DE

A new primary school for Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is designed as a resilient, landscape-oriented campus that responds to recurring flood events while creating a distinct and future-oriented learning environment. The project combines flexible cluster-based learning spaces with a strong integration of outdoor areas and sustainable construction principles.

Following severe flood damage in 2021, the project provides a new cluster-based, full-day primary school. Located near the Ahr in a heterogeneous context, the design establishes its own identity while preserving existing trees and integrating the sports hall. The school consists of a robust, flood-resistant ground floor with shared functions and two elevated timber pavilions housing flexible learning clusters organized around central communal spaces. A connected circulation system links all levels and supports adaptable use. The layout creates diverse outdoor spaces for play, learning, and retreat instead of a single courtyard. Phased construction allows continuous operation, while prefabricated timber structures ensure efficiency and adaptability.
