The new educational center of the Landshut Chamber of Skilled Crafts combines a modern campus for vocational training with an ambitious pilot project for sustainable and circular building. Located on the site of the former training facility, it creates a forward-looking environment for apprentices, teachers, and visitors while redefining the Chamber’s presence in the city.

Project by Behnisch Architekturbuero, Educational Center Landshut. Hand-drawn sketch of interior atrium with stairs, walkways, and people figures.

The design is organized around a spacious central atrium that connects workshops, classrooms, and administration, offering clarity and openness. Flexible, welcoming circulation areas serve as meeting points, exhibition spaces, and places for exchange. Workshops are located on the ground floor with direct outdoor connections, classrooms and specialized training areas are situated on the upper floors.
The building concept follows the principles of circular construction: materials are carefully selected for their ecological qualities and future reuse Timber, concrete, and steel are employed only where their properties are essential. Prefabricated timber-frame façades, clay panels for indoor climate regulation, and reversible construction systems ensure adaptability and long-term durability.

Sustainability is further enhanced through energy-efficient strategies. A groundwater heat pump, radiant ceiling panels, photovoltaic systems, and process heat recovery make nearly energy-neutral operation possible. Green roofs, biodiversity surfaces, and rainwater infiltration based on the sponge city principle strengthen the ecological performance and improve the microclimate.
As a pilot project for public education buildings, the center demonstrates how architecture can combine functionality, sustainability, and long-term value. It sets new standards for a resource-conscious and future-oriented approach to educational construction.
