The redevelopment of the Karlsplatz quarter creates new urban qualities by transforming previously neglected back areas into active and well-connected public spaces. A key objective is to link surrounding destinations such as the market hall, Breuninger department store, and pedestrian zones through an open, inviting ground floor that encourages movement and interaction.
The reorganization of Sporerstraße plays a central role, establishing new visual and spatial connections that integrate the area into the broader urban network. The design follows the existing building lines of historic structures while creating a cohesive ensemble of contemporary architecture without “back sides,” ensuring consistently high spatial quality. The new buildings integrate naturally into the historic context while introducing a modern architectural identity through materiality and form. The roofscape is treated as a “fifth façade,” highly visible within Stuttgart’s topography. The hotel forms the tallest element of the ensemble, yet remains subordinate to the city’s historic towers. Its distinctive, uncluttered roof gives the complex a strong visual identity.

The memorial “Hotel Silber” is carefully integrated into the design. Its entrance remains at the historic location, leading visitors from a quiet, contemplative space into the preserved underground areas, reinforcing its cultural and historical significance.
