New Lurup Neighborhood school

Hamburg, DE

The new district school in Hamburg-Lurup is conceived as an open and flexible learning environment that supports contemporary pedagogy. The design emphasizes transparency, communication, and the integration of diverse learning spaces.

site plan

The project consolidates three existing school locations into a single six-stream campus, responding to growing student numbers and evolving educational concepts. The building is designed as a light, terraced volume that integrates into its surroundings while maintaining a distinct architectural identity.

A central foyer organizes the ground floor, connecting shared functions such as multipurpose spaces, café, library, and all-day areas. Sports facilities are directly accessible and visually integrated. Open circulation and interconnected levels create a continuous spatial experience with strong links to outdoor areas. Upper levels are structured as flexible learning landscapes with fluid transitions between classrooms and communal spaces. Generous daylight and visual connections enhance orientation and interaction throughout the building.

Material and construction strategies combine a concrete structural system with a timber-based facade, ensuring durability, flexibility, and thermal performance while reinforcing the concept of an open learning environment. An integrated energy concept relies on passive design, daylight optimization, and efficient systems to minimize resource use while providing high user comfort.
